Royal Ferns, also
called Regal Ferns are beautiful, majestic garden perennials with large, coarse fronds.
A very large growing fern, growing as tall as 6 feet with ideal conditions -
otherwise plants stay around 4 feet tall spreading to a width of 2 feet. Royal fens grow
in a vase shape with bright green fronds. At maturity the sterile fronds are
tipped with brown tassle-like spore bearing leaflets. The Royal Fern is an excellent
selection for growing in very wet areas and actually prefers very moist soil. It
will grow in dryer areas with proper care from the gardener. Prepare the soil by
amending plenty of organic matter such as compost and peat moss. Mulch heavily to
help the roots stay cool and moist and above all make sure you water during dry spells.
Royal ferns will not tolerate drought conditions.
Note: Royal
Ferns will grow in full sun as long as they are provided with boggy conditions.
