The Perennial Plant
Association named Japanese Painted Fern the 2004 Perennial Plant of the Year. One of
the most reliable and easiest ferns to grow and beautiful as well. The lacy metallic
gray fronds dusted with accents of burgundy and red stems electrify dark shady areas of
the garden. Japanese Painted Ferns are stunning when planted with Hostas and Heucheras. Most
ferns have a very narrow window when it comes to climates they will endure.... not this
one. Native to China, Korea and of course Japan this fern grows in a wide range of
climates and is considered hardy from Zone 3 to 8. Japanese painted ferns grow in
clumps reaching 18 inches tall and 2 feet wide. It prefers shade but colors
are enhanced if some morning sun is available. Plants prefer a loose rich garden soil that
has been amended with plenty of organic material. For gorgeous ferns add 2 to 3 inches of
compost to the beds each spring. (learn

Note: Many
gardening books will claim that Japanese Painted Ferns are tolerant of dry conditions....
while we have found them to be more forgiving during dry spells they are by no means
considered to be drought tolerant.
