Perennials at Gorge Top Gardens: Coreopsis
A southern native, coreopsis, is both
heat tolerant and beautiful. This easy to grow perennial, also known as tickseed, will
liven up gardens that have to many shades of pastel pinks and blues. Coreopsis tends to be
one of the plants we use most often in our perennial borders. It easily combines with a
wide array of plants and is a must have for any sunny perennial garden. Most all
varieties of coreopsis are profuse bloomers that stay in color from late spring through
fall. Plants are not at all fussy about soils - but they do require full sun. Plants
will survive in shaded areas but performance is poor to say the least - resulting in leggy
plants and sparse flowering. For best results plant Coreopsis in a well drained soil
enriched with organic matter. Coreopsis is by no means a heavy feeder- if anything it
prefers a slightly deficient soil. We do not recommend the use of manures as it tends to
produce lush growth and poor flowering. Keep your feeding program limited to fish
emulsion about once per month during the growing season and a light dressing of bone meal
in early spring. Lightly prune foliage and remove spent flower heads through out the
season to keep coreopsis looking its best. (pictured above is Coreopsis 'Creme
Brulee')
