Like many other wildflowers
Asclepias tuberosa will thrive in hot dry locations where many other plants perish. This
showy Butterfly weed ignites with blazing orange flowers that first open up in May and
last through most of August. Perennials gardeners love this plants stamina and
appreciate the butterflies it attracts. Although the plant can thrive along roadsides in
the poorest of soils, Asclepias will make itself right at home in the rich moist soil of a
perennial garden. Plant in full sun as these plants will not tolerate shade. One of the
last perennials in the garden to break dormancy, be patient and as the soil warms the
plant will spring to life. Asclepias is a host plant for butterflies so don't be alarmed
if you see caterpillars feeding on the leaves. The caterpillars will not harm the plant
and soon you will have even more butterflies.
Note: Asclepias is a slow to establish itself in the
garden. Plants transplanted into the garden will seldom bloom in their first season.
