This selection of Hollyhocks absolutely
demands attention. Four inch wide, showy flowers combine the colors of raspberry red
and black currant with lighter shades of veining. Both single and semi-double flowers can
be found on the same plant. The throat of each flower is a bright yellow providing great
contrast. Flowers start to open up in June and Creme de Cassis stays in color through most
of August. As with most Alcea, this plant is classified as a biennial or short lived
perennial, but give the plant the proper conditions and it will self seed and remain in
the garden for years. Plants are very tall growing to 5 and 6 feet and may require
staking. Plant in full sun in a well amended soil that is moist but well drained.
Apply a generous amount of composted manure each spring as Hollyhocks are heavy feeders.
