Knock Out Rose Care
When
we say that Knockout roses are easy to grow we are not pulling your
leg. The plants really don't require much attention from the gardener,
it is for this reason that Knockouts are quickly becoming so popular.
These darling roses so easy that you can pretty much just dig a
hole, plant the bush -then sit back and enjoy the waves of color
season after season. Besides the occasional drink of water during
extreme dry spells and some optional pruning , Knock Out Roses are
"plant and forget".
If you decide not to prune the plants the roses can easily reach
heights of 3-4 feet with an equal spread. Occasional trimmings can
be done to keep the plants at the height and width you desire. If
you do decide to prune it is best to do all hard pruning in early
spring and perform only selective pruning during late spring and
summer. When hard pruning cut all the canes back so that only 12-18
inches remain.
The family of of Knockout Roses are winter hardy to zone 5 and
can endure the heat of any gardening zone in the United States.
Plants will grow just about anywhere in the country witht he exception
of the coldest areas such as zone 4 where they will need extra winter
protection. If you grow Knockouts in zone 4 you will need to apply
an extra layer of mulch in late fall and make sure that the plant
itself is protected from cold winds. When the weather warms in early
spring remove the extra layer of mulch from around the base of the
plant.
They really are this simple!
